Thirteen architectural works of the renowned Finnish architect Alvar Aalto are on the Tentative List for full listing as UNESCO World Heritage sites. Confirmation will take place within the year 2026.
https://whc.unesco.org/en/tentativelists/6509/

Travel tips

  • Go in the Finnish summertime (June – August) when all locations are open and when the central Finnish Lakeland with its forests and lakes is at its best.
  • Due to the hard Finnish winter, rail and road maintenance is carried out in the summertime. As a result there could be some changes in public transport provision such as short diversions or replacement buses for trains.
  • Book guided tours in advance for House of Culture, Aalto House, Studio Aalto, National Pensions Institute (KELA) also known as the Social Insurance Institution Main Office – all in Helsinki – and for the Muuratsalo Experimental House and Villa Mairea.
  • For tours of Säynätsalo Town Hall and Paimio Sanatorium you can also book in advance but you can also just turn up and join a tour.
  • Book accommodation in advance in Helsinki, Säynätsalo Town Hall, Turku and Paimio Sanatorium.
  • Guided tours generally last for one hour but you may wish to allocate more time at each location to linger and enjoy a fuller experience.
  • English is widely spoken throughout Finland. The country is also very safe and tolerant for single female travellers.

Finally

Add in another four days to visit the remaining three sites to complete the tour of the 13 Alvar Aalto sites as follows:

  • two days to visit Seinäjoki Civic Centre (go by train from Jyvaskyla en route to Pori and stay overnight in Seinäjoki);
  • another two days to visit Sunila Pulp Mill Housing Area (go by bus from Helsinki and overnight in the Housing Are where apartments are available on AriBnb and booking.com
  • then bus to Imatra to see the Church of Three Crosses, Vuoksenniska then a late train back to Helsinki.

Some Non-UNESCO sites

There are other Alvar Aalto sites worth visiting which will not be under the forthcoming UNESCO listing.  Three sites can be easily visited as day trips from Helsinki using public transport: Villa Kokkonen on the shores of Lake Tuusula , Church of the Cross in Lahti, and Villa Skeppet in  Ekenäs.
