Aalto’s Kauttua Industrial and Residential Complex

Slow Travel Visiting by Public Transport

Introduction

Although not included in the 13 sites on the UNESCO tentative list for listing in 2026, the former industrial and residential complex at Kauttua is worth visiting for its spectacular forested setting, its vernacular wooden architecture, the renowned terraced housing, and the riverside sauna. The area can be visited by car using Pori as a base, combined with visits to Villa Mairea, Pamio Sanitorium and Rauma Old Town.  However, it is possible to visit to Kauttua by public transport and spend a day or two, staying either at Villa Aalto or Kauttua Ironworks Manor.

The Kauttua Ironworks Park (Ruukinpuisto) is a cultural heritage site, protected by the Finnish Heritage Agency.  It has been an industrial site for over 300 years.  In 1937, Alvar Aalto received a commission from the Ahlström company for the town planning and infill buildings of the Kauttua ironworks area.  Key buildings include the Terraced Houses (exhibition open 11-14 on Saturdays), the River Sauna, Villa Aalto, and the Standard A-houses in Varkaudenmäki.  Since 1992 there has been a paper manufacturing mill owned by Jujo Thermal Ltd.  A good reference for more information is: https://www.ruukinpuisto.fi/en/history

My pre-season trip in late May

I travelled by bus from Säynätsalo to Jyväskylä then took two trains to Pori via Tampere, then a bus to Kauttua.  Alighting off the bus from Pori at the Kauttua I bus stop on Turuntie 2054, I walked for 15 minutes or so through the forest to the Kauttua complex.  Near this bus stop is a Sale Supermarket on Maaisillantie.  I stayed for two nights in Villa Aalto at €113 per night including breakfast taken at Kauttua Manor.  The area was very quiet at this time, with few other visitors.

Outward from Pori: Take a train to Pori (https://www.vr.fi/en). I found the most convenient direct bus from Pori to Kauttua was the Onnibus Line KA72 at 1615/1723 (https://reittiopas.matkahuolto.fi/).  There were not many other options. An alternative is to travel via Rauma on Seutu+ Bus Lines 100, 101, or 102 (https://seutuplus.fi/en/timetables/)

Return to Pori via Rauma: Take bus K60 at 0910 at Kauttua I bus stop then Line 100 operated by Seutu+ bus company from Rauma to Pori.
